Impact of GenAI on Junior Marketing Talent

Christine Downton - Observatory International Christine Downton Managing Partner, London July 14, 2025

AI is revolutionising job functions, it has the ability to automate repetitive tasks, remove the mundane and transform work in general. But that has significant implications for new junior marketers entering the profession.

As with any significant transformation, AI will have a significant impact on how marketing organisations and teams are structured, resourced and organised.

One area for caution we see is for those embarking on their marketing careers.

Traditionally marketers have learnt the fundamentals of their trade and their business through competitor and sector analysis, understanding data, unearthing insights as well as acquiring the core skills of brief writing, creative evaluation and optimisation.  If much of that can now be done by AI, how will the next generation of marketers learn their craft?

The more that AI technologies plays an increasing part in the creative process, the less hands-on junior talent becomes and, rather than achieving solutions through doing they are reached by asking a machine for the answer.  It is creativity via “prompt”, progress without understanding the ‘why’ or the ‘how’.

Recognising that the creative process has changed and ensuring training, support and guidance is key.
